Lion's Breath

In friendship let there be....

She was an acquaintance of my partners' through the Alberta Government... another runner. I had met her at the Banff-Jasper relay and sort of dismissed her as I would another runner... runners seem to have an 'I am too cool, too hard core for yoga' attitude. I could relate to that respectfully.

Then one day she contacted me to do a private lesson. I was surprised...booked her and met. She was very body conscious and I could sense, feel the runner mentality—competitive, hard driving and super fit. Beautiful.

She began coming to my classes and she exhibited a certain resonance with the practice. It really spoke to her. Months later this lovely creature requested another meeting as she was considering the Kshatriya Training Program.

I was ecstatic. Her presence in my life is a gift.

The Teacher Training class of 2009 was a class of superb individuals. The divine mix of every aspect of friendship a girl could ask for. (We have since decided to create a book club of the training class). We can all say that we so totally love each other. We grew in love through the process of growing into ourselves.

These people are only a few examples of wonderful friendships that have come into my life. In ‘True Love, A Practice of Awakening the Heart’, Thich Nhat Hanh says "To love is to be; to be loved is to be recognized by the other". In other words being in time and space with the ones you love is a necessary application of love through friendship. You have to recognize each other.

But the story line and the situations do not describe the inner feelings of friendship. Only the heart can feel it. It is the warm smile after a long day. I understand, says the friend. It is the joyful embrace after a long absence...I missed you. It is the shared experiences of laughing until your tummy hurts. It is knowing you would help me without question. It is that you believe in what I do in the world. It is the tears we cry when life takes a sudden turn. It is your thoughtfulness and encouragement. It is the fun we have doing yoga together. You are willing to hear me out rather than be right. When things go wrong, we accept graciously without blaming and gutting each other. It is being able to laugh at our own selves..over and over again. It is your questioning and curiosity about my inner life. It is the beauty I see in your smile, face and being. It is your undeniable presence in my life. It is knowing we love each other even when winds of time blow between us. It is that we open and blossom in each others' presence. That is friendship.

Recognizing the presence of a friend in your life can be established with a smile. It cannot however be established without time spent. Acknowledge the presence of the other with your time, intention and attention. We are all so busy doing. Take a moment to appreciate the presence of friendships in your life.

To all the lovely friends that grace us with their presence at Lion's Breath. We smile.
